From Concept to Distribution
An empirical investigation into the importance of a distributed biopharmaceutical technology solution for process standardisation.

The fragmented path from concept to distribution
Innovation from academia, emerging startups and small to medium-sized enterprises drives much of biotechnology’s development. Successfully navigating the biopharmaceutical development process typically requires organisations to outsource multiple supply-chain activities to specialist contractors.
Hiring and project-management practices remain fragmented. Contract research organisation, contract manufacturing organisation and contract development and manufacturing organisation services are still frequently sourced and managed manually.
Transparency, trust and accountability
The study examined whether a biopharmaceutical technology platform could help organisations discover, qualify and compare suitable contractors while protecting intellectual property, compliance and cybersecurity.
The investigation focused on three connected attributes of the drug-development cycle: academic, institutional and technological. It used diverse qualitative material to identify current gaps and evaluate the requirement for a more coherent technical structure.
A peer-governed data-sharing marketplace
The proposed model explored how blockchain could strengthen reliability, security and traceability across supply-chain and manufacturing processes. Potential capabilities included live progress tracking for pre-clinical studies, focused development, secure communications, supplier assurance and technology-licence tracking.
At the centre of the concept is a data-sharing platform connecting investors, advisory groups, academia, patients, large pharmaceutical companies, regulatory bodies, contract organisations and emerging biopharmaceutical businesses. The research considered how a marketplace composed of and governed by peers could support procurement and drug-development programmes.
